LONDON — As Small Business Week is recognized across the province, Ontario NDP Shadow Minister for Small Business, Terence Kernaghan (London North Centre), is calling on the provincial government to provide meaningful supports for small business owners who are the backbone of communities like London.
“Small businesses—from family-run bakeries and independent grocers to corner stores and neighbourhood retailers, are the heart of our city,” said Kernaghan. “They create local jobs, support families, and contribute to the unique quality and character of our communities.”
Despite their essential role in the local and provincial economy, many small businesses continue to face mounting pressures as rising costs for rent, utilities, and supplies are making it harder for them to stay open and continue to employ their valued team members.
“I’ve had the chance to visit many small businesses and spoke directly with owners,” Kernaghan added. “They’re working tirelessly, but the financial strain is becoming unsustainable. Despite their resilience, too many are being pushed to the brink.”
Kernaghan emphasized that while Small Business Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of local entrepreneurs, it should also be a moment for government to act, ensuring these businesses have the supports they need to thrive.
“The provincial government must step up with targeted relief and long-term solutions to ensure these businesses can survive, thrive, and continue serving their communities. Without real support, we risk losing the very businesses that make our neighbourhoods strong and vibrant.”
We're so happy to have you on the team. We'll be in touch soon.
